Join us for the Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) Drive to Care Volunteer Engagement Campaign. LBFE is currently seeking volunteers to help drive elders to medical appointments in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.
LBFE provides more than 800 rides annually to elders as part of the Medical Transportation Program. At this time, an additional 50 volunteers are needed to help elders across these counties. LBFE staff from other programs have been helping with rides but are unable to meet the full need of the community while also coordinating services.
By becoming a volunteer, you can:
Individuals interested in volunteering need to submit an application, receive a background check, complete a free orientation and training, and are able to receive stipends to help offset the cost of gas or mileage if needed. Click here to submit your volunteer application or call 906-482-6944.
Ten-dollar stipends are available for local transportation to doctor offices and nearby hospitals and additional support is available to offset the cost for regional rides to major medical centers hours away. Stipends not used go back into the fund to assist drivers with financial barriers while they help other elders in need. There is no cost to elders for utilizing Medical Transportation services.
A portion of funding supporting the Drive to Care Campaign has been made possible through the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and Superior Health Foundation.
