Core Programs

Programs and Services

Inspired by our founder Armand Marquiset’s desire to “spread across the earth igniting little fires of love,” we are providing friendship and services throughout five counties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan including Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Marquette, and Ontonagon. Please note that not all services are available in all locations. For more information, please call 906-482-6944 or email michigan@littlebrothers.org

Friendly Visiting

Our signature Friendly Visiting Program provides lonely older adults (age 60 and older), our Forever Friends, with regular visits in their home. Once added to the program, we make a commitment to be their friend for their lifetime. LBFE provides friendship and social support. Visits include more than just friendly conversation, we assist our Forever Friends with medical transportation, running errands, and small tasks.

Medical Transportation

Door-through-door transportation to and from doctor and hospital appointments is available for older adults (age 60 and older) who have no other affordable transportation options available. LBFE provides transportation in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties with limited transportation in Baraga, Marquette, and Ontonagon. Transportation between these service areas is also available as well as wheelchair accessible transportation. This services is provided free-of-charge.

Please call at least one week in advance to enable us to recruit a volunteer driver or reserve a wheelchair van.

Door-through-door transportation is picking up passengers at the door of their home and escorting them through the door of their destination.

Firewood Program

Many Copper Country residents still heat their home with firewood. Cut and split firewood is delivered to older adults (age 60 and older) to offset their annual heating costs througout the long winter. This supplemental firewood must be used solely for home heating, not for discretionary heating such as for sauna firewood.

Holiday Celebrations

We host holiday celebrations and serve a traditional meal on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter so older adults (age 60 and older) will not be alone on the holiday. These dinner parties are served at seven locations throughout Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Marquette, and Ontonagon Counties.

Our dinner parties are festive celebrations with a traditional holiday meal, brightly decorated hall and tables, entertainment, and lots of laughter. Before our elderly guests leave, they receive a fresh flower and small party favor.

Transportation is provided for those who need it, and all volunteers are encouraged to sit and eat with our elderly guests.

Food Assistance

Each month we deliver a personalized grocery bag of non-perishable food to older adults (age 60 and older) who qualify.

Medical Aid Equipment

We accept and loan out common aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, and commodes.

Social Activities and Parties

Forever Friends have an opportunity to visit with their peers and meet new friends while celebrating special occasions like birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

These events are reserved for our elderly Forever Friends and by invitation only. Not all activities are available in all counties.
